STEAM PEI

Job Description:

YOU:

Have a passion for science, technology, engineering, and/or math? Thrive off the energy of elementary school kids and enjoy inspiring young minds? Geek out over equipment like 3D printers and laser cutters? Share your Awesomeness with us! Play an instrument, love sports, act, sing, dance, draw, sew, have some magic tricks up your sleeve? We are always fascinated by the exciting opportunities to incorporate the A in STEAM!

THE OPPORTUNITY:

STEAM PEI is looking for Summer Camp Support Interns to work with our STEAM Team to ensure the safe delivery of summer camps at various locations across PEI. Our priority is creating an inclusive, warm, welcoming, educational, and fun space for everyone. This position will involve supporting the STEAM PEI summer camps by helping to prepare and organize materials, daily cleaning of equipment, ensuring compliance with Public Health requirements, and substituting as a camp facilitator when required.

From June 24 to August 30, for an average of 30 hours a week, this will be a full-time position to prepare for and be one of the facilitators at STEAM PEI summer camps. Expected hours are 8am-5pm on Monday, 12-5pm Tuesday to Thursday and 11am-5pm on Friday.

Hey, if you’ve been to a STEAM PEI camp in your younger days, let us know! This could be the next great step in your STEAM journey. Compensation is $15/hour for a high school student, $16/hour for returning students, and can lead towards future summer positions as STEAM PEI Summer Camp Facilitators and Camp Leaders. You’ll learn from, and be mentored by a team of STEAM professionals, and work alongside some pretty awesome STEAM post-secondary students. The real reward is the sense of accomplishment when you see students’ eyes light up with wonder and excitement. Contribute to the success of future generations of Islanders by helping build STEAM on PEI!

THE SKILLS:

Quite frankly, science can get messy! We want our students to be responsible in cleaning up their own messes, but inevitably there is still some support needed. Experience working with kids will be valuable as you help students find their way to the classroom on the first day, ensuring they feel welcome and comfortable. Working with kids also means a clean criminal record check is a must, as is ensuring all public health guidelines are maintained. WHIMIS training is required, but we can support you in acquiring the training if you don’t already have it. Excellent organizational skills are also critical as you help prepare materials for the next day’s activities.

An interest in science, technology, engineering, art, and/or math would be ideal. You definitely need to be comfortable and willing to try new things and continue your own learning as we like to stay on the cutting edge.

For the French Summer Camp position, you will need to be fluent and comfortable speaking in French with the students for the duration of the camps.

Diversity of perspective, including diversity of people, knowledge and cultures is important to us. We strive to provide a safe, highly inclusive, welcoming environment where everyone feels a sense of acceptance and belonging. Experience working with BIPOC and/or gender diverse students is also a plus for us!
