POSITION: Research & Development Technician

REPORTS TO: R&D Commercialization Manager

SALARY: Compensation commensurate with education and experience, 40-45K

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Permanent – Full Time

LOCATION: Charlottetown, PE

The Research and Development Technician will support all aspects of R&D while complying with regulatory, safety and good manufacturing practices. We want to hear from you if you want to be part of keeping Island Abbey on the leading edge of new product development.


  • Execute product development projects and documentation for the commercialization and first startup production
  • Conduct routine and advanced analytical tests in accordance with SOPs and regulatory guidance
  • Conduct standard tests on product samples to ensure compliance with specifications such as color, moisture, and dimension
  • Provide nutrition facts, ingredient declaration, package weight, serving size, and other relevant packaging information
  • Conduct and participate in formulation problem solving to support customer needs
  • Analyze data, prepare reports, and maintain documentation
  • Collaborate with Regulatory, Quality and Supply Chain teams
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment in the lab as well with tools and equipment used
  • Updating ERP systems


  • Diploma in Bioscience technology or degree in chemistry, health sciences or other related science degree or experience in laboratory analysis, research and materials processing
  • Must be able to understand and interpret process indications and take the appropriate corrective actions
  • Experience with basic diagnosis and maintenance of lab equipment as well as the ability to calibrate equipment is required
  • Experience operating lab experimental units (eg. Lab scale extruders, semi-works, small scale reactors, calibrators etc.) is required
  • Experience with manufacturing or production processes and procedures is an asset
  • Must be a detail-oriented problem-solver
  • Open to change and willing to learn new skills
  • Excellent organizational, time management and prioritization skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate within a team
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and flexible to adjust to evolving business needs
  • O365 and SharePoint experience
  • Knowledge of project management basics


Must have proof of eligibility to work in Canada


This position requires the ability to:

    • Sit for an extended period
    • Occasionally be present in manufacturing environment which can be noisy, hot, cold and require personal protective equipment
