Job Brief

We believe small businesses are at the heart of our communities, and championing them is worth fighting for. We empower small business owners to manage their finances fearlessly, by offering the simplest, all-in-one financial management solution they can’t live without.
Wavers are a special breed. We could write a novel on our award-winning culture and what makes us, us. However, we’d rather just show you. Take 1 minute and 48 seconds out of your day to get a quick glimpse on why you should join us.
About Risk:
The Risk team is responsible for assessing the credit risk of new businesses, detecting and preventing fraud, optimizing our transaction processes, assisting with enhancements of risk prevention strategies and liaising with our small business owners to develop and implement the best possible solutions.
About the Risk Analyst:
Reporting to the Lead Payments Risk Analyst, the Risk Analyst plays a critical role at Wave. This position isn’t for the faint of heart: you must be a highly motivated individual with strong communication skills, carry a sense of tact and empathy under pressure, and have a sixth sense for identifying problems while implementing and communicating solutions.
Looking to join this team? You’ll work alongside some top notch Wavers such as:
Raf Diana: Senior Manager, Risk Operations. Raf leads and supports a rapidly growing team, who together crush fraudsters and find complex patterns of fraud all before lunch. Raf herself has been taking down all types of financial fraud for over 20 years, but doesn’t look a day over 39. Raf has even executed face-to-face interviews with offenders who thought they were getting away with it! Raf’s leadership approach is collaborative, empowering, and strength based. In Raf’s spare time she’s raising her 10 year old son, throwing pizza doughs, playing the Godfather theme song on the mandolin, and sticking up for the little guys/girls.

Here’s how you’ll make an impact:

    • Adjudicate new Payment applications to assess the credit risk of new businesses and entrepreneurs.
    • Perform complex fraud investigations using a wide variety of data in order to accept, reject or refer transactions for further investigation. You’re a self-proclaimed (risk) detective!
    • Assess the chargeback risk of each business and work with small business owners to establish good business practices to protect themselves against disputes.
    • Provide ongoing account management to proactively identify deterioration of good businesses. Working  closely with our customers, Payment Operations, Customer Success and the Product team, allowing us to deliver the best experience possible to our users.
    • Demonstrate strong attention to detail in minimizing fraudulent activities, identifying risk exposure, highlighting fraud trends, and determining regulatory or compliance violations.
    • The ability to contribute to the development of fraud detection systems using data and systems such as SQL and other proprietary applications is an asset.

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

    • Have 2 to 4 years of credit underwriting/adjudicating experience working in a payments or fintech space.
    • Bring strong merchant credit risk experience with the ability to identify high risk businesses.
    • Display a thorough understanding of best practices for preventing service related chargebacks, and experience in improving policies and operations within a fast-paced environment.
    • Have proven fraud and/or compliance risk experience, preferably having worked in monitoring accounts and transactions to identify fraudulent behaviour in online businesses.
    • Bring experience working with rule-based fraud detection tools and a willingness to apply these skills using both internal and third party tools.
    • Consider yourself tech-savvy, proficient in Word and Excel, and you never underestimate the power of a Google or database search.
    • Are able to manage relationships with our small business owners, using your excellent communication skills to do so!
    • Can ask “the right questions” when probing for critical information from a customer and deliver not-so-great news in a way that they are still left feeling great about Wave.
    • Are resourceful – you know where to dig up relevant, real-world information and understand “the big picture” before making decisions.
