Purpose of Job:

The Cook is responsible for the Kitchen Area and all activities related to food preparation.

 Qualifications:

  • College Diploma in Culinary Arts from a recognized education facility 
  • Preference will be given to those with related work experience
  • This is a position requiring a motivated individual who works well with minimal supervision.
  • It is expected that the Cook will establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with co-workers, residents, visitors, and other staff.
  • Prior experience in not-for-profit organizations and/or health care settings would be considered an advantage
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions
  • Must maintain a neat and clean appearance at all time in accordance with the policies of the Home and the policies of ARAMARK.
  • Must be physically able to perform all assigned duties and functions
  • Must be physically able to lift and transfer heavy, hot items and stand for majority of shift

 Primary Functions:

Perform resident services (dietary) ie. preparation and organization of all foods cooked for residents, staff and visitors.  To ensure that portion controls and production menus are adhered to on a daily basis and to work closely with the Operations Manager/Cook 2 on any and all menu changes.

Objectives:

  • To plan, direct and prepare all meals and snacks
  • To practice sanitary methods of food preparation and good personal hygiene habits.
  • To run an effective kitchen.
  • To respect confidentiality on matters related to the Home.

 Duties:

  • To cook and/or prepare meals for residents, staff and visitors
  • To place all prepared foods in the steamtables at appropriate times of day
  • Must adhere to all Food Safety and Sanitation Procedures
  • Clean and maintain all work areas and areas of responsibility as per the assigned cleaning schedule
  • Report any and all equipment issues/repair needs to the Dietary Manager.
  • Report any and all issues that may affect your ability to perform your duties
  • Check daily menus to make sure that all foods (that need to be) are taken out to thaw in advance of meal preparation.
  • Baking
  • Prepares vegetables
  • Assists food preparation for special events
  • Cleans up work areas and utensils
  • Visits residents (in regards to food preferences) as required
  • Participates in and directs cleaning of kitchen area, bake room, stoves, storerooms, vegetable room, freezers, and walk-in fridge.
  • Responsible for reporting maintenance breakdowns in kitchen area, storerooms on work requisitions.
  • Assist in staff orientation
  • Attends in-service as required
  • Participates in fire drills
  • Attends all meeting scheduled by authorized personnel
