The PEI Department of Agriculture and Land aims to encourage the development of an innovative, diverse and inclusive workforce which enables the organization to realize its goals. The main purpose of the Agricultural Insurance Officer position is to promote the use of business risk management programs that fall under the Federal/Provincial Agricultural Policy Framework. These programs are used to provide production risk protection against uncontrollable natural perils. Specifically, this position manages all aspects of Agricultural Insurance accounts throughout the duration of the farming season. This position is responsible for: promoting, selling, enrolling, monitoring, verifying, regulating, and processing all data to finalize files and submit claims for payment. Duties include but not limited to:

• Promote the program and enrol all producers interested in the AgriInsurance programs by the required deadlines as set out in the AgriInsurance Agreement.
• Providing producers with an overview of the programs to determine which plan best suits their farming operation based on specific risks and needs, and how each program may interact or overlap.
• Calculate Insurance quotes to show all possible options of coverage and extended program options.
• Conduct field inspections of all insured crops to assess establishment and overall health of plants, and determine that proper management practices are being adhered to and deadlines are met.
• Verify producer declared field acreage by measuring fields with GPS software.
• Determining insurable and non insurable perils.
• Completing claims and production paperwork by analyzing and computed collected data.
• Completing paperwork and supporting documentation that is forwarded to management for verification and payment.
• Physically sampling grains, beans, and other crops to determine volumes, densities, and moisture levels in order to compute accurate production amounts, and/or indemnity payments where applicable.
• Sampling insured potatoes during the harvest season to determine crop quality and saleability.
• Measuring bins and warehouses when required by the programs.
• Ensure compliance with the AgriInsurance Agreement.
• Other duties as required.

Qualifications:
• A related University Degree in Agriculture or Business is required;
• Considerable farm background and broad knowledge of agricultural crop and production practices are essential;
• Experience and proficiency in using computers and working with spreadsheets in Excel;
• Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered;
• Ability to interpret financial statements for farm business;
• Must have good problem-solving skills;
• Must have good oral and written communication skills;
• Knowledge of cultural and growing practices of a broad range of crops;
• Knowledge of the legislative acts regarding agriculture such as the Plant Health Act, buffer zone legislation, and the Agricultural Crop Rotation Act;
• Valid Driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle;
• Ability to work independently with good time management skills;
• Ability to perform physical sampling of crops and bin measurement calculations;
• Must be physically fit and able to do lifting;
• WHMIS training is an asset.
